Welcome to Urban Homesteading
Urban What?
Urban Homesteading is a term that is used to describe applied small-scale permaculture principles and techniques in the context of our urban / sub-urban land.
Permaculture is an approach to designing human settlements and agricultural systems that mimic the relationships found in natural ecologies.
The term permaculture was popularized by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in their 1978 Permaculture One book, and was used to describe an "integrated, evolving system of perennial or self-perpetuating plant and animal species useful to man."
Permaculture itself is an evolving concept that has made its way into the popular mind space over the past 30+ years and seems to have reached its tipping point over the past few years by sparking the Transition Towns Movement and countless other constructive efforts in response to the challenges of Peak Oil, Climate Change, and social collapse that we are bearing witness to.
